‘From sand to sea’

…I board the plane to North African music and full seats, last time I flew Royal Air Maroc was a while ago, probably when I was still guiding in Africa. That was 3 months or so leading trekking trips in the Anti-Atlas Mountains, 2 week back to-back trips, sleeping on Berber roof tops, stars overhead, the cold chill of the mountains nights biting into our sleeping bags…

‘The Camouflage King’

The Camouflage King…really? I’ve heard that before…’ I thought to myself as my guide explained how intrinsically difficult it was to spot the snow leopard in its natural habitat. I’ve got a few years under my belt these days when it comes to wildlife and being able to pick out that far off lion in the savannah grasses, an elusive leopard amongst the undergrowth, or a chameleon shielding itself from an encroaching predator is something I pride myself on.

‘Walking in the foothills’

Finally Shakti bound. It’s been years and finally inbound. To the foothills of the Himalayas, where the forests of the tiger parks meet the trails of the villages. A slow trip, no highlight, no quest, just a walk, a walk from village to village with a friend and to see where that takes us.

It is the start of our first ever Journey to Nature’s Edge (J2NE) and only 24hrs in, it is living up to its name. The series of projects link in with our Expeditions for Change and also our Natural World Heroes; raising awareness around critical topics, shining a light on frontline conservationists.

It’s the smells and the heat that always hit me first. The plane doors open and bang, right in the face. I love it, it’s Africa and it makes me feel that sense of home and adventure all at once. A slight trepidation, a mystery, a chance to be back here once again waiting for the weeks ahead to unfold.

It’s been a long time planning this one has. I think over a year or so now. It started with chat, with our whale specialist and marine guru, Pat. We originally met about 8 years ago, in Dubai, he was a lawyer at the time, but a marine fanatic, something that he explained to me over lunch the next day.
